Currencies Took the Hit the Budgets Refused

THE KILWA VIEW

Brent near $105 met budgets that had already spent their buffers, and where a state would not pay, the currency paid. The Egyptian pound broke 53, Uganda bought its shilling back with 225bp, the Moroccan dirham slid 2.95% in a week and Libya's parallel dinar broke 10. Where institutions let prices clear, capital came in: Nigerian inflation fell to 14.63%, Dakar raised 338.2bn CFA at home and London admitted Airtel Money. We buy the markets that let prices clear and hedge the ones that defend a level.

The pound broke 53 before the CBE moved, so the carry now pays for its own exit

The CBE rate reached 53.53 on Oct 15, the weakest in about six months, and foreigners sold a net EGP 5.8bn of T-bills on Oct 14 (Al Borsa, Ar, single-sourced on flows).

Why it matters. The carry is repricing through the currency, so the Oct 29 tail has moved from a cut to a hike.

KILWA READ · LIKELY · 55-80%
We hold that the CBE leaves rates unchanged on Oct 29 as likely (55-80%), and the tail has moved from a cut to a hike. Confidence is moderate.
WRONG IF  A CBE move on Oct 29, or the sell rate above 54.00 first.
WATCH NEXT  Oct 29: CBE MPC (call: hold, likely).

By seat. PE & VC: Price exits at 54 to the dollar. DFIs: Front-load dollar disbursements. corporates: Extend import hedges to December.
